Wills and Trusts
In California, there are two primary options for distributing your assets after death: wills and trusts.
A will is a legal document that outlines how to disperse your assets and property after your death.
A trust, on the other hand, is a living financial entity. Your property goes into the trust, and the trust becomes the legal owner of your assets. A trustee holds and manages assets and distributes them to your beneficiaries. Trusts can be revocable or irrevocable, and they offer more flexibility and control over how your property is handled.
Both wills and trusts have benefits and drawbacks. Our team can review your circumstances and help you choose which option is right for you.

Advance Health Care Directives
Good estate planning focuses on more than just your passing. It can also help make sure your healthcare wishes are followed during your life.
If you become unable to make those decisions for yourself, an advance health care directive can protect you. With this document, you can appoint someone you trust to manage your healthcare. Your directive will include specific instructions for your medical care if you are ever incapacitated.
Additionally, a directive can outline your preferences for end-of-life care, such as whether you would like to be kept on life support.
Without an advance health care directive, others, including medical professionals, will make decisions about your medical care. These people could be strangers with no knowledge of your wishes.
Having the proper directives in place will ensure your wishes are respected, and your loved ones are not left with difficult decisions to make on their own. Our team is here to help you build a solid health care directive plan that benefits you and your family.
Power of Attorney
Essentially, power of attorney is a legal document that grants someone else, known as the “agent,” the authority to act on your behalf. People generally use this document in case they ever become incapacitated or unable to make decisions for themselves.
You can give your agent a wide range of authority over your estate. These powers include paying bills, buying and selling assets in your name, making investments for you, and so forth.
California offers different types of powers. With a “durable power of attorney,” the document’s stipulations begin after you sign it, and they remain in effect if you become incapacitated. A “springing power of attorney,” however, activates only when a specific event occurs, such as incapacity.
Our team can help you create a power of attorney plan. We will work hard to make sure the document meets your needs and wishes, and we can help you vet any potential agents.
Guardianships and Conservatorships
Guardianships and conservatorships are key elements in any good estate plan.
A guardianshipis a legal arrangement where an individual, typically a parent, gives another person the legal right to care for their child.
A conservatorshipis a court-appointed legal arrangement. It appoints someone to manage the financial and personal affairs of another who is unable to do so themselves.
Both of these arrangements have pros and cons. Our team can assist you in understanding the nuances of these arrangements, allowing you to make informed decisions that protect your loved ones and assets.
